OJH's Karin Lauterbach Honored for Excellence in Math Teaching

Oakwood Junior High math teacher Karin Lauterbach was recognized at the November Board of Education meeting for receiving the prestigious Linda M. Gojak Award from the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM). Lauterbach was honored at the organization's state conference in Dayton on October 23.

This special award is presented to outstanding educators who show a deep commitment to teaching, leadership, and service. It honors those who not only inspire their students but also support their colleagues and help strengthen math education all across Ohio.

Lauterbach truly embodies the spirit of this award. She is known for her incredible dedication and her ability to inspire a genuine love of learning in her students. She skillfully guides them through challenging critical thinking tasks and offers steadfast support, helping every student grow as a problem-solver and build confidence in their own abilities.

Her passion for learning doesn't stop at her classroom door. Lauterbach is a true instructional leader and an active member of the district's Professional Development Committee. She has helped bring transformative new ideas to Oakwood schools, leading book studies on important works like "Mathematical Mindsets" and "Building Thinking Classrooms."

Also, a National Board Certified teacher, Lauterbach champions the idea of a "growth mindset," where mistakes are always seen as learning opportunities. Her powerful influence and collaborative spirit have made a lasting impact on her teaching team and the entire school community.

The award is named for Linda M. Gojak, a nationally recognized leader in mathematics education, making it a truly fitting recognition for an educator who demonstrates that same passion and dedication every day.

Smith Students Launch into STEM Learning

How far can you launch a pom pom with popsicle sticks, rubber bands, straws, masking tape, and a spoon? That was the challenge Principal Cassie Schoch gave Smith Elementary students during a recent STEM activity.

Working in teams, students designed and tested creative contraptions such as catapults and slingshots while discovering that problem-solving is about collaboration, experimentation, and celebrating progress along the way.

Music Appreciation at Smith Elementary

Smith Fifth and Sixth grades enjoyed field trips to the Schuster Center last month.

The Fifth grade took in the Young People's Concert Pure Imagination on Oct. 25th. They learned how music, opera, and dance come together to tell a story and evoke memories, emotion, and more. They explored drama and comedy with Mozart’s Don Giovanni and took a musical trip down the flowing Moldau River with conductor Neal Gittleman.

The Smith Sixth grade enjoyed a performance of the DCDC "Remember the Time" which highlighted the spellbinding artistry of DCDC through three enduring works. Tommie-Waheed Evans' Home/An Untitled Portrait wraps the Victoria Theatre in brilliant light, text and snapshots of "home" in all of its complicated glory. Stafford C. Berry Jr. transports viewers to a twilight time where a rain-soaked block party recalls the great migration. Sets and Chasers  by Kevin Ward celebrates Duke Ellington's groundbreaking radio broadcasts of the swinging '40s.
