CHECK-OUT POLICIES

Classes have scheduled library time once per week, but students are welcome to come to the library for additional visits as needed. All students may check out 2 books at a time.  Students may renew items and request books.

Library Collection

The Smith Elementary library collection is shared with first through sixth grade students. There are materials aimed at younger students (although many picture books are great for older readers) and some that are published for mature sixth grade students (although families may want to read aloud chapter books to primary grade children).

The decision to purchase books is a process that includes supporting curriculum needs, offering award-winning and well-reviewed titles, representing diversity, and fulfilling student and staff requests. The Library Media Center’s top priority is to promote literacy and to keep students engaged and excited about reading.

Families should be aware of their student’s independent reading choices. (See Pernille Ripp’s blog for a brief and excellent statement about the power of children choosing what they read.)

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Smith Library Media Specialist Elaine Fultz by email at or phone at 937-297-5335.
