From Mrs. Cowell, Smith School Principal

The second quarter has started off strong at Smith School. The partnerships that are being developed with families through parent-teacher conferences is so valuable for the success of our students. We cannot thank you all enough for your ongoing support and time and dedication to the education of your child(ren). We are so grateful to work in a district with amazing parent involvement.

Speaking of parent involvement, a HUGE shout out and thank you to the PTO and the Fall Festival/Ghostwood committee. The event was so well-organized, full of fun activities and an all around success.

Because fall is officially here and that means crisp, cool weather. Be sure to label all of those extra layers of clothing that your children wear as they head to school each morning. We already have a number of items in the lost and found. Come check it out if you think your child has misplaced an item.

Veterans Day Program

We cordially invite active military personnel, veterans, parents, family and community members to this year's Veterans Day program, to be held on Monday, Nov. 12 at 11a.m. in front of Smith School.  Come celebrate our veterans with us in this special ceremony!

From Mrs. Hummer, Smith School Counselor

Happy November Smith Families!

We had a very successful FUN RUN and speaker!  It was nice to see so many kids "going places".  I loved seeing the smiles on the way to the stadium and am so proud of our kids for their running, walking, and support of one another!

For the past few weeks, I have been working with second grade on learning what responsibility means and that when we are responsible, we build better relationships.  We have read What if Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick. This book teaches us that when we think that "breaking of the rules just a little bit" might not be a big deal…. But, if everyone broke that rule, it would be a disaster! As a class, they created their own new pages to the book as funny reminders of "what not to do". Be sure to ask your second grader about their addition to the book and talk about the bad AND good consequences of different behaviors.

November's theme for TIMBER is Balance.  This is a good time of year to remember to stop and think about the things for which we are grateful and not merely our "to-do" list.  This can be difficult as we try to manage homework, jobs, sports, family commitments, and other extra-curricular activities, but even taking a pause to remember one positive of the day can improve mood and increase energy!  My challenge this month is for us to say yes to the priorities and be courageous enough to say no as needed to maintain a healthier balance in our lives.

As always, I am thankful each day for the students, staff, and families that I serve. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving season!

One Call

Oakwood City Schools uses the One Call Now messaging system to send voice messages to our families. By default, the "Home" number of the person listed as the student's primary contact is automatically entered into the One Call Now system. You can add additional numbers as desired.

Image of someone sleeping

From the School Nurse - Are you sleeping?

We have spent time in some of the classrooms teaching and reviewing hand washing and other healthy habits with our students. We know that hand washing is the #1 way to stay healthy, but another very important way to stay healthy is by getting enough sleep. When we sleep our body is repairing itself from the days activities. When we don't get enough sleep, it can affect every aspect of our life. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours per day for elementary-aged children.

Remember it is important to "disconnect" ourselves from all electronic devices (computer, phone, TV, video games, ipods, etc.) at least an hour before we go to bed to allow our brains to slow down. If someone has trouble sleeping, reading, meditation, and other relaxation techniques can prepare your body for sleep.
