Happy October!
Time is flying by and we are doing many amazing things to learn and grow here at Smith. The first graders just completed a unit on "Inside Out" Emotions where we discussed different ways to manage various emotions and be good friends. Each class made a book to keep in their class library that includes photos of their own feeling faces as well as a lengthy list of applicable coping strategies developed with their class! It was really fun for them to get to see themselves and their classmates "emotion faces" and then get to share with their peers about positive ways to make themselves and others "feel better".

Our BOLD (Building Our Lives Drug and alcohol free) Club students will be coming to Smith on October 12th to spend time with our students at recess. They will be playing games as well as being positive role models!

TIMBER sessions continue as our Fun Run is quickly approaching. October 19th is the big day, so mark your calendars! Students will participate in our annual run/walk to the high school stadium with and inspirational guest speaker and activities on the topic of Going Places, by Peter H. Reynolds, our chosen anchor book of the month. Check out the Oakwood TIMBER facebook page for additional details and photos.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child. It is so much fun working with these students and staff members!

Blue Shirt Day - October 17th

October is National Bully Prevention Month.  All students and staff are asked to wear a blue shirt that day to support the importance of being kind to one another.

Take a stand, Oakwood, against unkind behaviors on Blue Shirt Day!

Smith Music

Sixth graders at Smith have the opportunity to learn instrumental music in orchestra and band.  See both of these ensembles perform at our Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 5th!

Kitchen News

Kids' Kitchen Council has started up again. We had so many apply that we split them into two groups - one started in Sept and the other will begin in Jan. Both groups will do the same things, just different times of the year. We can't wait to see what new items these students come up with for the menus. Thank you to all who applied!

Image Washing Hands

From the School Nurse

Hand washing is the NUMBER ONE way to prevent the spread of infection. As we
begin to head into cold and flu season we should review when to wash our hands
and proper hand washing techniques.
When should we wash our hands?

1. After using the bathroom
2. Before handling food
3. After playing outside
4. After playing with animals
5. When our hands look and/or feel dirty
6. Before we touch or hold a newborn baby
7. After we use a tissue to wipe/blow our nose

It is also important to remember to ALWAYS cover your cough, and use a tissue to
wipe/blow your nose.

These things will help them stay healthy this school year!
