Vote!
Don't forget May 7 is Election Day. On the ballot is Oakwood Schools levy, Issue 8. The issue is one vote with two parts, a 4.99 mil operating levy, the District's lowest request for operating dollars in more than 30 years, and a 2.71 mil bond which would generate the money required for Phase 1 of the District's Master Facilities Plan. We hope you will be informed and head to the polls Tuesday. For more information, you can visit the District website.

Smith School and Shoes 4 the Shoeless
Fifth and sixth grade WIN Leadership Group students recently went on field trips in service with the "Shoes 4 the Shoeless" organization at Demmitt Elementary School in Vandalia and Emmerson Academy in Dayton. The event was a schedule service project providing an opportunity for the students to practice their leadership skills. Each student was paired with an adult volunteer to greet the children in need of new shoes, then fit them with both socks and shoes of their choice. Not only were the children happy to get new shoes but our students who served say they took home a great sense of pride in being able to help others.
"Shoes 4 the Shoeless was founded in 2010 by a small group of people who discovered a great need within our community. As of early 2019, we have de livered well over 75,000 pairs of shoes and socks to disadvantaged children throughout the Greater Miami Valley region. The need remains great, our work is unending and will continue."

From the School Nurse
Attention Parents of 6th grade students All students entering 7th grade for the 2019-2020 school year are required to have a Tdap and meningococcal vaccine on file on or before the first day of school. This is a mandated law in the State of Ohio. Call your licensed health care provider to see if your student has already received the vaccine. If not, schedule an appointment for them to receive it. If your student does not have documentation of the Tdap and meningococcal vaccine on file by the first day of school, your student will have 14 days to produce the paperwork or they will be excluded from school until it is received. If excluded they will not be able to participate in any school activities, including sports teams and clubs. Please call Mrs. Detamore at Oakwood Junior High if you have any questions.
Student medications If your student has a medication at school, it will need to picked up by noon Friday, May 31, 2019. If the medications are not picked up, they will be appropriately disposed. We will not store medications at school during the summer. If you have any questions or wish to arrange another pick up time, please contact the school nurse.
From Sharon Liapis, Smith School PE
I am writing to all of you with emotions of joy and sadness as my last days at Smith Elementary comes to a close. I have been in the Oakwood School system for over 25 years. Having teaching assignments at Harman, Lange School and Smith School, I pretty much covered a large portion of the school district and had an opportunity to get to know and work with many of you.
I will miss the students and staff from my everyday routine. I have truly had a satisfying and rewarding time in my chosen profession. At the same time, retirement is what we all anticipate, and I certainly look forward to what lies ahead.
Thank you for all of your help, encouragement and support through these years. I know that I will truly miss the students and cherish the opportunities I have had to work with the Smith School Family. |
