Student Activities & Clubs

The announcement team is made up of 6th-grade students who meet weekly after school to record the daily school announcement shows for the upcoming week. Students learn how to run the camera and the teleprompter. They also learn what they need to do to be successful in front of the camera.

The Cardio Club is for students in grades 3-6 without an adult/family member and PK-2 students with an adult/family member. Get kids moving, focus on healthy habits, and have fun. The club meets once a week in the fall and spring.

Advisor: Run by the Smith PTO

The Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Club provides students with a fun and creative space to explore storytelling, teamwork, and strategy. Students will dive into the imaginative world of D&D, where they can develop problem-solving skills, collaborate with peers, and build friendships in an engaging and supportive environment. The club encourages role-playing, critical thinking, and creativity, making it a unique way for students to learn and have fun. Students in 5th and 6th grade can participate. The club meets every Thursday from 11:40am-12:20pm in the IDEA Lab.

Students in 5th grade at Smith may apply for Eco-Action Team in early September.  Meetings are held at 12:15 on Mondays in Mrs. Nye’s room 212.  The club spends most of its time collecting food to compost in the cafeteria.  Other activities include collecting candy wrappers from Halloween to help keep them out of landfills and recycling plastic cups in the cafeteria.  In the spring, students partner with the teachers to help clean up an area in Oakwood.

The editing team is open to any 6th grader. These students learn to use Canva and I-Movie to edit videos for projects such as the Announcement Team Blooper Reels, Puppet Shows for the Friday Show, and other special events for the school. They learn to create opening pieces and commercials, edit green screens, add music, create music, and many other things. The editing team meets from 7:30 am - 8:15 once a week.

Students in grades 2-6 can assist in coming up with new items for the Smith lunch menu. Students choose items to taste test and the highest-ranked items are on the next month's menu. Sign up with Mrs. Miller if you would like to partake.

This group meets once a month during lunch and is student-led.  This group offers students a place to share what is on their minds and to talk it out with others to help with solutions.

The Smith Math team is a group of students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who enjoy solving challenging math problems. We meet weekly to practice our skills, explore new concepts, and prepare for math competitions. We hope to foster a love of learning and critical thinking through engaging activities and friendly competition. The team meets in Miss Brouwer’s room before school. For the 2024-2025 school year, we will be participating in the MOEMS competition.

The mission of the Military Kids Club is to provide a fun and safe place for our military kids to be encouraged, strengthened and connected to the E.D. Smith Community. The club meets about once a month during the lunch period (11:40-12:40) in the Library to do fun activities and connect with each other.

The puppet team is for 6th-graders (1-3rd quarters) and 5th- and 6th-graders (4th quarter). The students on the puppet team write scripts, and create the puppet shows that air on the Friday show. They also work with “guest puppeteers” from each grade level to help them understand and create a puppet segment for the show.

The school store is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings and after school. Interested 5th graders were invited to apply to work with our 6th-grade managers. Sales staff arrive at the store at 8:15 a.m. or 3:05 p.m. on their assigned day. A 6th-grade manager trains each salesperson and works with them during their shifts. Sales staff help customers one at a time, ensuring accurate transactions and practicing courteous customer service.

Students in grades 4-6 may apply for Sign Language Club. This club provides a fun and engaging environment where students can learn the basics of ASL, including fingerspelling, common signs, and simple conversational phrases. Our goal is to enhance communication skills, promote inclusivity, and foster an appreciation for Deaf culture among our young learners.

Tech Team Jr. is for  4tt grade students.  Students were invited to join this group that meets every Thursday for 20 minutes of instruction on Docs, Excel, Sheets, and more. Then they can return after lunch for coding projects for the final 20 minutes.

Advisors: Katie Harrison and Mel Knostman

Yearbook is a group of 5th and 6th grade students that want to learn a little about what goes into putting a yearbook together. Students will help with cover design, building and designing the yearbook and organizing and selling books at the end of the year. Meetings occur before school or at lunch as needed.
